DEVAMInatçı beyaz çoraplarını, beyaz çamaşırlarını, tüm bedenini, inci taneleri ve dünya ile bağlantı kurduğu beyaz küreleri çaya daldırarak, kolonyal bir ürün olan Seylan Çayı’nın tadını çıkarmanın “Öteki” yollarını arıyor. Çay, dünyanın çatlaklarını, derin yarıklarını, koyu ve güçlü kokusuyla sarmalıyor ve beyaz olan her şeye rengini veriyor.
“Batı” kültürünün simgesi operalar ve aryalar, bir süredir çalışmalarımın kritik kaynağı. Batılı klasik bir operaya ait arya üzerinde çalışarak onun bir parçasına dönüşürken, operanın konusu olan meseleleri tersyüz etmenin, yıkmanın ve yeniden yapmanın karşıtlığı ile ilgileniyorum. Bu sefer Georges Bizet'in “İnci Avcıları” oryantalist operasının sesini duymak için düşüncelerim Seylan'ın kendisine uzandı ve beni Sri Lanka'nın sömürge ürünü çaya götürdü.”

How to Enjoy Ceylon Tea (Seylan Çayı’nın Tadı Nasıl Çıkarılır), İstanbul Kültür Sanat Vakfı (IKSV) desteği ile Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris, FR) misafir sanatçı programı kapsamında üretilmiş, Dansmakers Amsterdam Prodüksiyonu ile Be Mobile Create Together Programı kapsamında 2019’da Podium Mozaiek Amsterdam’da ilk gösterimini gerçekleştirmiştir.

The rhetorical question “How to enjoy Ceylon Tea” followed by an exhaustively detailed description of how to make a cup of tea is revealing the colonial past of the West fueled with the desire to teach the most efficient way of doing things, in this case a cup of tea. By dipping her white socks, white laundry, her entire body, pearl beads, and the white spheres through which she connects with the world into tea, the artist seeks “Other” ways of enjoying Ceylon Tea — a colonial product. Tea envelops the cracks and deep fissures of the world with its dark and potent aroma, staining everything white with its color.
“Operas and arias — symbols of “Western” culture — have long been a critical source in my work. While working on an aria from a classical Western opera and gradually becoming part of it, I explore the contradiction of subverting, dismantling, and reconstructing the very issues the opera addresses. This time, in order to hear the voice of Georges Bizet’s orientalist opera The Pearl Fishers, my thoughts extended toward Ceylon itself, leading me to the colonial commodity of tea from Sri Lanka.”

How to Enjoy Ceylon Tea (Seylan Çayı’nın Tadı Nasıl Çıkarılır) was created with the support of the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV) as part of the Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris, FR) artist-in-residence program. It had its premiere in 2019 at Podium Mozaiek Amsterdam, produced by Dansmakers Amsterdam within the scope of the Be Mobile Create Together Program.
